“The HIPAA Eligibility Transaction System (HETS) provides Medicare beneficiary information to Medicare providers, suppliers, and their authorized representatives for the purposes of determining beneficiary eligibility. HETS provides real-time verification of beneficiary eligibility using the ASC X12 270/271 EDI standard, and processes approximately one billion transactions annually. Submitters access HETS either by using the CMS Extranet (TCP/IP), through establishing internet connectivity using Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and Web Services Description Language (WSDL) envelope standards, or by using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) multi-part” Source: Sparksoft
