Safety Shower and Eyewash Corrections Phase 1
NIST is initiating a Design-Build project to correct safety shower and eyewash deficiencies at its research and development campus in Boulder, Colorado. This first phase addresses emergency fixtures that failed to meet simultaneous operation requirements during an internal study. The contractor will evaluate existing recommendations, provide engineered designs, and perform construction to bring fixtures into compliance with the ANSI Z358.1-2014 standard. The work includes a base requirement for Building 22 and four optional CLINs for Buildings 25, 42, 1, and 2. The performance period runs from October 1, 2026, through March 29, 2029. All work must follow OFPM Site Standards for architectural, mechanical, and electrical systems. Key personnel, including the Project Manager and Superintendent, must have at least 10 years of relevant experience. Proposals are due June 23, 2026. The project follows the NIST OFPM Site Standards, which dictate material selection, installation methods, and system integration across all disciplines. Adhere to NIST OFPM Site Standards for all architectural, mechanical, electrical, and civil work.

Many of the deficiencies identified have been remedied by NIST OFPM employees completing the recommended corrective actions. However, the scope in some buildings/areas is large enough to warrant contracted construction: Building 22 (B22), Building 25 (B25), Building 42 (B42/Central Utility Plant – CUP), Building 1 (B1), and Building 2 (B2) all have emergency fixtures needing attention. The intent of this project is to remedy the remaining deficiencies such that all emergency fixtures are compliant with ANSI Z358.1-2014. This Design-Build project is structured with B22 as the base scope and four option CLINs for the other abovementioned areas. Recommendations presented in this SOW and supporting documents are intended to be an optional starting point. Additional design and coordination will be necessary to proceed with any of the recommendations. It is the responsibility of the contractor to evaluate and confirm the viability of the recommendations, provide an engineered design, and execute the construction to successfully bring all fixtures within project scope into compliance.
